YouView to be featured in 2015 Sony Bravia TVs
Sony has announced it will be the first TV maker to offer built-in YouView functionality. The announcement of the partnership between Sony and YouView means that the Japanese manufacturer is the first to offer YouView integrated into a television, rather than a set-top box.
YouView’s intuitive scroll-back EPG will offer all the UK catch-up services, meaning you can fire up BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD or Demand 5 right from the EPG, rather than having to open the app and search for the programme you want to watch.
Bravia owners will also be able to use YouView’s integrated search. Such an approach would make it possible for people only getting introduced to long-running series to scroll back through the series’ history and start from episode 1. Presumably, this would be done through the same app, so that you would not have to launch Android TV separately in order to, say, view something on Netflix.
As far as upgrades go, this is just a software change at the heart of it, one that isn’t that large in the grand scheme of things.
Android TV will also appear on Sony’s 2015 range, offering access to a number of apps, including YouView, via a new, user-friendly menu screen.
The new range will include 20 models with built-in YouView, including 12 panels with 4K resolution.
Sony UK and Ireland country head John Anderson explained: ‘The way we watch TV is changing, with more demand than ever for a large range of content, when we want it, how we want it. We’re delighted to be the first manufacturer in the UK to announce the addition of YouView to our range of TVs.
We believe that our new BRAVIA range now has an unparalleled combination of Sony’s fantastic picture quality, fantastic design and the widest choice of content ever complete with Sony High Resolution Audio.’
But for now, it is not clear how long we will have to wait to see this functionality running on our TV sets too. Till we are waiting, do tell us your views on this advancement of television technology, through comments below.
