Samsung unveils Galaxy S5 with full HD display, Snapdragon 801 processor, fingerprint scanner
Samsung today officially unveiled the Galaxy S5 at MWC 2014 event in Barcelona, Spain. The Galaxy S5 has 5.1 inch full HD display, a Quad core Snapdragon 801 processor, fingerprint scanner, water resistant, heart rate sensor, new TouchWiz UI and many more new features.
There has been series of leaks surrounding the Galaxy S5 starting that it will be launched with 64 bit processor and 2K display. Next came the news that it won’t be launched in MWC 2014 event and then detailed specifications and benchmarks were leaked.
The Galaxy S5 has a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED screen with full HD display with resolution of 1920×1080 pixels giving pixel density of 432 ppi. It is powered by 2.5 GHz quad core Snapdragon 801 processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM. The smartphone runs on Android KitKat 4.4.2 with Samsung’s new TouchWiz UI which is said to be a toned down version.
The smartphone will come with 16 MP primary camera with LED flash and supports 4K video recording at 3840×2160 pixels with Selective Focus feature which lets you change the focus of a photo after you have captured same as what Nokia offers. The HDR Live Mode lets you see how the HDR photos will look like. It has the fastest camera that requires only 0.3 seconds to capture and shoot a photo. It comes with 16 GB and 32 GB versions and both are expandable upto 64 GB via microSD card. Additionally, there’s a 2.1 MP front camera.
Connectivity options on the Galaxy S5 include fifth generation Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, LTE category 4, Bluetooth v4.0, USB 3.0, NFC and IR Blaster. The 2,800 mAh battery claims talktime of 21 hours and standby time of 391 hours. The back of Galaxy S5 is leather like and is a polycarbonate build same as Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 edition but feels more premium. The sides are a blend of Polycarbonate and glass fiber.
Samsung has made Galaxy S5 IP67 dust and water resistant and can survive under 3 feet water for maximum of 30 minutes at a time. It also comes with a fingerprint scanner in competition to Apple’s iPhone 5S and is embedded in the Home key. To save your fingerprint, you need to swipe your finger across the Home button eight times. One can save upto 3 fingerprints at a time. The fingerprint scanner can be used for authentication on PayPal in browser itself.
The Download Booster feature lets you download file using Wi-Fi and LTE simultaneously. The S Health 3.0 is integrated with heart rate sensor located near the LED flash. Holding your finger to the sensor will count the heart rate. S Health remembers the history of your heart rate and gives graph of it over time and also acts as pedometer and food meter, diet and exercise record.
It also has Ultra Power Saving Mode, Quick Connect, Private mode and Kids mode. The Ultra Power Saving Mode will turn the display to black and white and stop unnecessary features that minimizes battery consumption. It will be available in White, Black, Blue and Copper Gold colors and will be available in 150 countries including India from 11th April. Samsung however hasn’t revealed the price.
